Great connections — the gospel of John is unbelievably rich! … and what a powerful ending. If only they could hear.

(Also I am tempted to ask if your son takes requests for imprecatory prayers 😬)

Thanks Joy. I came across Trevor Laurence’s book Cursing with God just a little while after that July 4. I was definitely more interested to learn about imprecatory prayer after that event…

Psalm 29 has been on my favorites list for decades, and what an enriched and refreshed grasp (and appreciation) I have now for how the Lord communicates his glory as a gathering, approaching storm in the Psalm. To understand it more fully in light of the eschatological framework of John 29 and your exegesis around the LXX “bronte” is powerful. Paradigm shifting. Humbling and comforting. Encouraging and convicting. The social, political, ecclesiastical insanity that’s running rampant today (and we’re not so unique “today,” are we?) shows how readily, eagerly we religiocrats love to whore after golden ephods. Lord, strike with your lightning. Let your thunder peal.

Wow, thanks for this Jonathan (and please forgive the delayed response, somehow this escaped my notice). Great connection with Psalm 29, and what an awesome and awful (full of awe) reminder. It just stormed with thunder and lightning where I’m at and, with my bent toward self-importance, I completely missed “the voice of the LORD in power, the voice of the LORD in splendor.” So thank you!

Very interesting, my friend. This sure brings the whole story of that situation to a greater state of contemplation and wonder about our inexcusable sin and God's perfect goodness and justice.
